THE HORSE BOY
(rides again)

Wed Feb 10, Nelson Capitol Theatre 7:30 pm

Folks have been asking to show this inpiring doc again, so here it is ONE NIGHT ONLY for your viewing pleasure!

How far would you travel to heal your child? An intensely personal yet epic spiritual journey, THE HORSE BOY follows one Texas couple and their autistic son as they trek on horseback through Outer Mongolia in a desperate attempt to treat his condition with shamanic healing. When two-yr-old Rowan was diagnosed with autism, Rupert Isaacson, a writer and former horse trainer, and his wife Kristin Neff, a psychology professor, sought the best possible medical care for their son – but traditional therapies had little effect. Then they discovered that Rowan has a profound affinity for animals-particularly horses and the family set off on a quest for a possible cure…

THE HORSE BOY is part travel adventure, part insight into shamanic tradition and part intimate look at the autistic mind.  In telling one family’s extraordinary story, the film gives voice to the thousands who display amazing courage and creativity everyday in the battle against this mysterious and heartbreaking epidemic. This ravishing documentary odyssey gives insight into how, in life’s darkest moments, one can find the gateway to joy and wonder.

Rated PG, 96 mins.

There are documentaries about quirky characters with unusual quests …usually Werner Herzog is in the credits -  and then there is Big River Man

Overweight and over 50, Martin Strel attempts to shatter his own world record with what can only be described as the longest, most dangerous swim in history - in an effort to bring some focus to the environmental condition of the world’s rivers .

Strel paddles through malevolent gangs, isolated tribes, crocodiles, toxic waste, lethal whirlpools and toothy piranhas during an historic 3375 mile swim down the Amazon - guzzling as much as two bottles of wine a day whilst still immersed.

Director John Maringouin captures the many dimensions of Strel's one-of-a-kind quest, from his strained working relationship with Borut, his son and manager, to his ultimate aspiration of contributing to a cleaner, greener world.

Environmental campaigner, world-class athlete, compulsive drinker and adventurer, Martin Strel makes Big River Man a journey not to be missed.

Rated PG or NUTS... run time is 96 minutes.

PROM NIGHT IN MISSISSIPPI

Mon Feb 8, Nakusp Bonnington Arts Ctr, 7 pm

1n 2008, segregation still runs deep in Charleston Mississippi's high school - Morgan Freedman and the students try to make change happen.

In 1997 years after the race riots of the 60s, Charleston Mississippi's only high school still had segregated proms. Famous resident, actor Morgan Freeman offered to pay for the prom provided it was integrated...and the town refused.

In 2008, Morgan offered again...and the East Tallahatchie County School Board accepted.

This seemingly inconsequential rite of passage suddenly becomes profound as the weight of history falls on teenage shoulders. This film follows the Charleston High senior class of 2008 preparing and attending their historic, first integrated prom, in the context of strong emotions, traditions, and conflict inherent in race relations in the community, and in the deep south.

We quickly learn that change does not come easily in this sleepy Delta town.

Audience Award winner at HOT DOCs, Oxford, CrossRoads Film Fests,
Best Doc AFI Dallas Fest,
Official Slection SUNDANCE Film Fest.

Rated PG and run time is 90 minutes.

LAST TRAIN HOME

Wed April 14, Nelson Capitol Theatre 7:30 pm
Mon May 10, Nakusp's Bonnington Arts Ctr. 7 pm

From the makers of UP THE YANGTZE

Every spring, China’s cities are plunged into chaos, as all at once, a tidal wave of humanity attempts to return home by train. It is the Chinese New Year. The wave is made up of millions of migrant factory workers. The homes they seek are the rural villages and families they left behind to seek work in the booming coastal cities. It is an epic spectacle that tells us much about China, a country discarding traditional ways as it hurtles towards modernity and global economic dominance.

Last Train Home, an emotionally engaging and visually beautiful debut film from Chinese-Canadian director Lixin Fan, draws us into the fractured lives of a single migrant family caught up in this desperate annual migration, following a married couple (the Zhangs) working in Guangzhou city as they compete with 200 million others to board a train to visit their children in the countryside.

Intimate and candid, the film paints a human portrait of the dramatic changes sweeping China. We identify with the Zhangs as they navigate through the stark and difficult choices of a society caught between old ways and new realities.
